I know, I know, summer still has a bit of life on in it yet. But I thought y'all might enjoy a few pictures of how my summer is going! It's pretty busy here and I haven't been able to really leave the city, save for some weekend day trips, however, it's still been fun! (And also a reminder of this country's nightmarish history.)

Anyway, play on!

Sorry for the length ... )

Anyway, that's my summer so far. Hope you enjoyed this picspam! Have a good night!

A+, would weep again (and again and again) at the sight of the small vessels. Other than that, all my TC feels, good gods.

It's that time in the summer when I start to dream about being somewhere far to the north, with a view of the sea. To be fair, I also dream about the north in the depths of winter. To be even fairer, the weather here has been cool and rainy, so maybe that's made me think about northern climes.

If I were for some reason forced to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a hotel, I would go to the Fogo Island Inn, off the northern coast of Newfoundland.

Or maybe a less ridiculously posh place with bonus icebergs, the Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat, Greenland.

I remind myself that I've already got a weekend booked in Iceland on my way home to the States in December. And I can sit and enjoy views of the cold sea from a lovely steaming hotpot at any number of municipal pools. And my room probably has a view of the harbor!

But that's a long ways off. I'm pondering whether to plan an August long weekend somewhere in the UK, and whether it would be worth the faff to travel somewhere more northerly, as opposed to just going to Brighton or something. I'm very fond of Scarborough. I also have this weird desire to see the Isle of Man after watching the national road race championships a few weeks ago.

Also worth pointing out that I'm going to Saint Petersburg at the end of August, and perhaps that counts as northerly if not quite with an unobstructed ocean view? I'm rather tempted by Kronstadt...

So, there's this fandom secret (it's the seventh down -- sorry, I'd link directly to it, but I'm on mobile and it's more trouble than it's worth) about Sirius' ~canonical sexuality. I mean, canonically? He doesn't have one. If Remus/Sirius shippers take their ship as near canon, who cares? It's not changing anything. You can take JKR's words about Tonks being Remus' only love and forget it or keep it. But that's not really how people work, it is? They fall in love, they fall out.

I honestly have an annoying time with JKR's extra-canonical additions -- like Dumbledore and Wizard Hitler being the only gays in the magical village, etc -- but there's no point in fighting with other fans about it. (Unless you want to, then you can. If you want to wank about Harry Potter right now in the year of our Lord (Voldemort) 2017, sound off on the comments below. We can fight with knives.)

Personally, with no illusions about it being canon or w/e, I think Sirius was in love with James and transferred some of that obsession (but not the attraction) over to Harry. In that way, he's a lot like Dave from The Charioteer. I was thinking this when fixing my hair this morning and realized that. Wait, don't I find Dave creepy and controlling? (Yes.) Shouldn't I ...? Of course, the difference is that Andrew was raised by Dave whilst Harry only saw Sirius a few times before the latter's death.

Now if Sirius had raised Harry... I'm trying to think of how to describe the exact opposite of pacifist Quakers but coming up blank. But um, yeah. That. With magic.

I had a lot of long, loving posts written out in my head. But you get bullet points instead.

- I've been meaning to post. I have selfies to post! Profound meditations on life and fandom to postulate! (No, I don't.) But in then end, eh. My life's been pretty peaceful so far. Work stresses me out.

- I was sleeping on the bus and someone said I looked pretty which was weird but nice because she was a motherly older woman than a creepy dude. Is this sexist?

- I wonder if the movie Dunkirk will prompt people to read The Charioteer? A friend on Twitter said she checked it out to she can read my fic and I am alternately delighted and dismayed. Not to worry, I have told her that there is a lot better fic than mine out there and will be reccing when she's finished with the book.

- Also, the Doctor will be a woman and not a moment too soon! I am a little disappointed that the Doctor isn't going to be played by a person of color, but I also remember how shit the fandom was to Mickey and Martha, so.... (Not just the fandom, but the writers too. Honestly, that's one of the reasons I'm not particularly nostalgic about LJ-based/'old' fandom -- it was incredibly hostile place for POC.)

Anyway, Jodie Whittaker was excellent in Broadchurch, even during the shaky second season. (Haven't seen the third.) But the reason she looked so familiar is of course because she was in Cranford! Ah, the period drama industrial complex, what would I do without you? I'm think I should probably see season 10 (I wanna see Bill!) and then the 13th Doctor soonish. Maybe once it's available to stream and I can do it with one go.

- Also, I have been driving my AO3 subscribers away by posting nothing but SASO fills for months. I really need to take a break from it and post something else. But what? Why?

Anyway, I posted something that might be relevant to y'alls.

I can't look at a trailer of Dunkirk without weeping, so this Friday should be an interesting exercise for whatever poor soul is stuck next to me.

UK flist, any idea of things to do in London 22-27 July? Other Half is going to the London Free School of Critical and Feminist Theory 17-21st, and then she's going to linger for a few days. This is her first trip, so we'd be grateful for suggestions.

I've been feeling inexplicably unwell so I finished work early this afternoon and spent it lying on the couch watching the Tour de France...

• One of Britain's top cyclists from the 80s, Philippa York, has just publicly come out as trans during the Tour. Apparently she had been avoiding public life for some years, but people in the know were aware that she'd transitioned. What's heartening is that the reception from the cycling world has, as far as I can tell, been extremely supportive. She's been guest commentating on ITV for a few stages now, and I haven't heard a single stumble over name or pronouns. Chapeau, Philippa. It must have taken a lot of courage.

• David Millar gets so into the tactics. You get the feeling that he doesn't care so much who wins (or does a good job of covering it up, unlike Carlton Kirby, who has his crushes), but he gets passionately angry if he disagrees with a team's choices: "why are they doing that??!? It's ridiculous! What are they trying to achieve???"

Yet when Ned Boulting asked, he heartily and believably denied having any desire to be out on the mountain himself: "no, no, a thousand times no."

• I've managed to get my parents into watching the Tour. They're both backing Froome. What did I do to deserve this?

• As always, a special thanks is due to whoever at ITV does the end-of-show montages. They are always superbly on point and they almost always choose great music. Today I owe them particular thanks for introducing me to the music of Jacqueline Taïeb, a French singer of Tunisian origin from the 60s.

Apart from being a great song, Bravo just makes me think of the "Carlien Daten?" saga. (Spoiler: after the date they "decided to just be friends.")

I don't get the feeling that Taïeb pities (or particularly respects) the hero, though perhaps I'm reading too much into it...

(French lyrics)

• ETA: What have I learned from the Orica Backstage Pass so far? That Esteban Chaves is reading a Danielle Steele novel and that (unrelatedly) Matt Hayman has had to explain to him what a "bromance" is.

I did actually laugh out loud at this one. I love these guys. Can they be a Yuletide fandom?
