im always impressed by the sheer diversity of renault's Bad Mothers when it sounds like she only had one of them herself, but im even more impressed & endeared by hilary's staunch refusal to examine her own emotions. anyway, im only taking a breather to bang out some thoughts

right now im about two pages into chapter 10, and i dont know if it's an accident that at first you cant tell if julian's thinking about Hilary or his mother. there are people who like to call fav male characters "my son", but with julian it would be too on the nose to be funny.

also-- a mysterious and beautiful boy who apologizes nicely for existing, lays his head in your lap like a unicorn, and does exactly what you say?? sounds too good to be true, and it probably is!!!

thanks to fandom i am expecting something bizarre about caves to happen at any moment, and since i averted my eyes from the rest of the spoilers, all i can imagine is some kind of spelunking disaster a la The Descent (2005), except with one dude instead of six women and (maybe) no cave gremlin bloodbath

edit: OH MY GOD THIS KID IS SOOOOOOO FUCKINGGGGG WEEEEEEEEIIIIIRD

edit two:
- five pages to describe julian getting bloodied in a fistfight is FAR TOO KINKY

- "His body seemed always to have a life of its own aloof from the divisions of his mind, an arrogant self-sufficiency, careless and serene." didn't MR say this about alexander as a boy too?? i love how shes so unpretentious about granting immense physical beauty & grace to characters she wants you to love. some parts of MR's writing have always remind me of old-school BL manga & i honestly think they share some kind of spiritual ancestry..................

- they're at julian's house and MOM'S OUT, are they gonna do it

- no he's gonna marry her first...oh my god.......this guy...

- "...she admitted to herself that moment when he had asked her for a cigarette after the play had been the first in which she had known inescapably that she loved him, and she wondered how she had managed to evade this knowledge at the time." sometimes i wonder too, hilary.

- julian's tendency to destroy shrubbery & toss things into open fires makes me scared

- "It was a terrible thing to mix with love, this sense of absolute, yet tremblingly precarious power." i dunno, all of the men in MR novels seem to take it up like second nature-- it's only hilary who falters, who in my estimation has the least of it to abuse.

- the bedroom scene...............................good night

Can I just say how much I'm enjoying seeing someone else encountering this (really rather odd) book for the first time? I hope you're having half as much fun as I am.

im even more impressed & endeared by hilary's staunch refusal to examine her own emotions.

Emotions, what are they even? She's so perceptive in every other way and yet so endearingly useless when it comes to matters of the heart.

i dont know if it's an accident that at first you cant tell if julian's thinking about Hilary or his mother.

It has to be intentional. Has to. This is Renault we're talking about, after all.

five pages to describe julian getting bloodied in a fistfight is FAR TOO KINKY

It's the whole novel. At first glance it seems like this sedate 1930s countryside romance where nothing really happens, but OMG it is the kinkiest thing that ever kinked. Literally any tropefic you write for this book makes more sense than the thing itself. Omegaverse? Made for Return to Night...

i dunno, all of the men in MR novels seem to take it up like second nature-- it's only hilary who falters, who in my estimation has the least of it to abuse.

Just a tad of internalised misogyny, our Hilary. Although I think there's also a sense in which she grasps more eagerly at this chance for power and worship because she gets so little of it in the rest of her life - certainly not in her professional life, where her male colleagues would have pretty young nurses falling over themselves to do their bidding. For her Julian is more in the nature of a once in a lifetime chance.

the bedroom scene...............................good night

LOL, just wait till the morning after. ;)

im having a blast, and im so happy youre along for the ride!!

\o/

hilary....that's not very alpha of you

Alas, that's why we need fic. She has her moments, though.

overall tho i love how real and complex hilary reads as a character-- how deep her emotions run in spite of her unwillingness to acknowledge them, her half-rejection, half-compliance with the performance of femininity, all the internal compromises she makes in order to survive in a male-dominated profession

Yes! When it comes down to it, the novel is all about Hilary for me. She's one of my favourite characters in fiction for exactly these reasons. She's just so *real* and compelling a person. (Or maybe she just reminds me of myself, I don't know.)
